Express Entry Explained: Your Path to Canadian Permanent Residence

Express Entry is Canada's flagship immigration system for skilled workers seeking permanent residence. As a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC), I help clients navigate this process every day. Here's what you need to know.

Quick Overview

Express Entry is a points-based system where candidates are ranked by their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. The highest-scoring candidates receive invitations to apply for permanent residence.

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an online system that manages applications for three federal economic immigration programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) - For skilled workers with foreign work experience
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) - For qualified tradespersons
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC) - For those with Canadian work experience

How the System Works

The process involves three main steps:

  1. Create your profile - Submit your information about education, work experience, language skills, and other factors
  2. Enter the pool - If eligible, you'll receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score
  3. Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) - Candidates with the highest scores are invited to apply for permanent residence

Understanding Your CRS Score

Your CRS score determines your ranking in the Express Entry pool. Key factors include:

  • Age (maximum points at 20-29 years)
  • Education level and credentials
  • Language proficiency (English and/or French)
  • Work experience (Canadian and foreign)
  • Arranged employment in Canada
  • Provincial nomination (adds 600 points)

Game Changer

A provincial nomination adds 600 points to your CRS score, virtually guaranteeing an invitation to apply. This is often the fastest path for candidates with lower initial scores.

Tips to Improve Your Score

Based on my experience helping hundreds of applicants, here are proven strategies:

  • Improve your language scores - Even a small improvement in IELTS or TEF can add significant points
  • Get your credentials assessed - An Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) is mandatory
  • Consider Provincial Nominee Programs - A nomination adds 600 points, virtually guaranteeing an invitation
  • Gain Canadian experience - Work or study in Canada boosts your profile

Common Questions

How long does the process take?
Once invited, you have 60 days to submit a complete application. Processing typically takes 6 months.

Do I need a job offer?
No, but arranged employment adds points and strengthens your application.

Can my family be included?
Yes, your spouse and dependent children can be included in your application.
