Canada welcomes millions of visitors each year. Some come to see family they have missed for years. Others arrive to explore a country they might one day call home. Business travelers attend meetings and conferences that shape their careers. Whatever draws you to Canada, a visitor visa is often your first step.
Why Visit Canada
Reconnect with family and friends. Distance separates families across continents. A visitor visa brings you to the people who matter most, for birthdays, graduations, holidays, or simply time together that video calls can never replace.
Explore before you commit. Thinking about studying or working in Canada? A visit lets you walk the streets, meet people, and feel the culture before making life-changing decisions. Many of our permanent residency clients started their Canadian journey as visitors.
Conduct business in person. Some meetings happen best face to face. Canada hosts international conferences, industry events, and business opportunities that can advance your career. A visitor visa gets you in the room where decisions are made.
What a Visitor Visa Allows
A visitor visa, officially called a Temporary Resident Visa, is a stamp in your passport showing you meet Canada's entry requirements. It can be single-entry or multiple-entry, allowing you to visit once or return multiple times over the visa's validity.
Multiple-entry visas can be valid for up to 10 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. This means you can visit Canada repeatedly without applying each time, as long as each visit stays within the allowed duration.
Each visit can last up to 6 months. Border officers may authorize shorter stays depending on your situation, but most visitors receive the full six-month period.
Who Needs a Visitor Visa
Citizens of over 130 countries need a visitor visa to enter Canada. Whether you need one depends on your passport, your nationality, and how you plan to travel. Some travelers from visa-exempt countries need only an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for air travel.
The requirements are strict. You need a valid passport, good health, no criminal or immigration violations, ties to your home country, and enough money to support your stay. You must also convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada when your visit ends.
The Application Process
Visitor visa applications require more than filling out forms. Officers evaluate your financial situation, your connections to home, your travel history, and your stated reasons for visiting. Applications that do not clearly address these factors face delays or refusals.
Fees start at $100 CAD per person, with a maximum of $500 CAD for families of five or more. Biometrics cost an additional $85 CAD per person. Processing times vary significantly by country and can stretch from weeks to months depending on where you apply.
Extending Your Stay
Already in Canada and want to stay longer? You can apply for a visitor record to extend your time. This is not a new visa - it is a document that extends your authorized stay while you remain in Canada.
Apply at least 30 days before your status expires. If you apply on time, you can stay in Canada under implied status while your extension is processed. If your status expires before you apply, you lose this protection and face more complicated options.
Extensions are not automatic. You need to show why you want to stay longer, prove you can support yourself financially, and demonstrate ties to your home country that will bring you back. Applications without strong documentation often face refusals.
Common Reasons for Refusal
Visitor visa refusals happen for specific reasons. Officers may doubt your intent to leave Canada. They may question whether your finances support your stated travel plans. They may see insufficient ties to your home country. Or they may find inconsistencies in your application.
These refusals can affect future applications. Understanding what went wrong - and addressing it properly - matters more than simply reapplying and hoping for different results.
