PR Card Renewal

Keep your travel privileges current

Your Key to Coming Home

Your PR card is more than plastic. It's proof that you belong in Canada, and it's required every time you board a commercial flight or train back into the country. When that card expires, getting home becomes complicated.

A valid PR card lets you move freely. You can visit family abroad, take business trips, or vacation anywhere in the world knowing you can return to Canada without hassle.

Ready to Get Started?

Borderline residency? Extended time abroad? We calculate your days carefully, identify any qualifying exceptions, and present your renewal application to avoid refusals and status loss.

Why Renewal Matters

Permanent resident status doesn't expire with your card. You remain a permanent resident even after your card stops being valid. But without a current card, you'll face problems at check-in counters and border crossings.

Airlines and other commercial carriers must verify your status before letting you board. An expired card doesn't satisfy that requirement. You'd need to apply for a PR Travel Document from a Canadian office abroad, which adds delays and stress to any trip.

Renewing before your card expires keeps your travel options open. Waiting until the last minute, or worse, until after expiration, limits what you can do.

The Residency Requirement

Here's where renewals get complicated. To receive a new PR card, you must have been physically present in Canada for at least 730 days within the past five years. That's two years out of five.

If you've spent extended time outside Canada, you might not meet this requirement. Maybe you were caring for a sick parent abroad. Maybe your job required international assignments. Whatever the reason, falling short of 730 days puts your renewal at risk.

Some absences count toward your residency. Time spent outside Canada may still qualify if you were traveling with a Canadian citizen spouse, working for a Canadian business abroad, or in certain other situations. The rules are specific, and documentation requirements are strict.

What Can Go Wrong

Renewal applications seem straightforward until they're not. Officers reviewing your file will calculate your time in Canada carefully. If their count differs from yours, you'll need to explain the discrepancy.

Travel history matters. You need accurate records of every trip outside Canada. Entry and exit stamps, boarding passes, employment records - anything that proves where you were and when.

Incomplete applications cause delays. Missing documents or unclear explanations trigger requests for more information. Each back-and-forth adds weeks or months to your processing time.

The worst outcome is having your application refused and losing your PR status. This can happen if you don't meet the residency requirement and can't prove an exception applies.

Urgent Processing Options

Sometimes you can't wait for standard processing. Emergency travel for medical reasons, family emergencies, or other urgent situations may qualify for faster processing.

Urgent requests require proof of your circumstances. A letter from a doctor, a death certificate, or other documentation showing why you need your card quickly.

Getting It Right the First Time

PR card renewals test your record-keeping and your ability to present your case clearly. Officers don't have time to piece together incomplete information. Your application needs to tell a complete story with supporting documents for every claim.

We help permanent residents organize their travel history, gather the right documents, and present applications that move through the system without unnecessary delays. If your residency calculation is borderline, we'll identify the strongest arguments for your case.

Ready to Renew?

Don't wait until your card expires or until you've booked travel. Let's review your situation and make sure your renewal goes smoothly.
